The Taming of the Shrew
Taming of the Shrew is a framed narrative about Lucentio falling in love with Bianca-- but having to deal with marrying off her older sister, Katherine, first. The fortune seeking Petruchio takes up the mantle of marrying katherine, and embarks on a vicious series of taming rituals. Elizabeth chose this play as a relevant commentary to the political climate of today-- where we see men in power claiming legal jurisdiction over female bodies-- and wants to spin the concept on its head. Her production will play with gender as something performed, and in doing so draw a line between humorous gender play and viscious social sanctions for nonconformity.
